The P.A.W. framework was developed by Dr. Rob Harner in collaboration with the Newport Beach Fire Department to provide a simple ‘easy to access’ reference and reminder that emergencies can happen at any time and your preparedness and swift action can help keep your pets safe.
P- Preparedness
In this section of the P.A.W. framework, we will review some of the items that are helpful for you to incorporate into your plan. Remember, emergencies are unpredictable and Preparedness begins with a plan. Take a few minutes today to review your plan and make sure every family member (including your pets) is ready to move when it matters most. The following points can help you prepare and organize your plan.
- MICROCHIP – Make sure all your pets are microchipped and that your current contact information is registered with the microchip company. Reach out to us if you need to schedule an appointment to get your pet microchipped.
- SMOKE ALARMS – It is recommended to test your smoke alarms monthly. Walk through your home and confirm the location of each smoke alarm. Remember, every bedroom should have its own smoke alarm. It is also recommended to replace the battery once a year and replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years. For more specific information regarding smoke alarms, please visit www.nfpa.org/education
- BUDDY SYSTEM – Ask a family member or friend today if they will participate in your Buddy System in the event of an emergency. Provide your “Buddy” with a key to your home and instructions of how to help evacuate your pets in the event of an emergency when you are unable to help. Review where your pets Go-Bags is located and where to meet you when it is safe to be reunited.
- FAMILY PLAN- Discuss with your family what will happen in an emergency and develop your plan using the helpful links below. Keeping everyone informed is the best defense.
A – Action
The A in the P.A.W. framework stands for Action. In this section, we will review the items you should consider keeping in your Go-Bag so when it is time to take action and evacuate, it is fast and simple. Your Go-Bag should be a dufflebag or backpack style bag that can be easily carried during an evacuation. Don’t forget to inform your “Buddy” where you keep your Go-Bag in your home.
Your Go-Bag should include:
- VACCINE CERTIFICATE -A paper copy of your pet’s vaccine records including a description of your pet, their microchip number, and contact information. Don’t forget to attach a photo of your pet to this paperwork. Reach out to Ranch Heights Veterinary today and we will gladly make a printed copy of your vaccine certificate. Don’t forget to attach a photo of your pet to this paperwork.
- STURDY LEASH – Visit www.myvetstoreonline.pharmacy for multiple leash options. We like item PROD057.016 (LupinePet Splash Designs Waterproof 6 ft Dog Leash – Neon Orange) as this is brightly colored and easy to identify.
- FOOD – It is recommended to keep enough food in your Go Bag for 3 days. Remember, don’t forget a can opener when you are packing canned food in your Go-Bag.
- WATER- bottled water for 3 days.
- BOWLS- for dispensing food and water
- FIRST AID KIT – Visit www.myvetstoreonline.pharmacy for your first aid kit. We like item 015.40005.2 (Agri-Pro enterprises Pet First Aid Kit).
W – Warnings
W stands for warnings. It is helpful to register with your local resources so you can receive emergency warnings. Warnings can be received through social media platforms, emails, and text alerts. Being aware that an emergency is occurring in your area can help save precious time during an evacuation. Please take a few minutes to visit the following resources listed below for the best ways to keep in contact with local agencies that assist during emergencies.
